No sprouts yet? Check these four things.

Depth, temperature, moisture and a little patience.

01

Read the packet first

Sowing depth and light requirements vary. Some seeds need light for germination; others need covering. Follow instructions for that species rather than burying every seed at the same depth.

02

Check the growing conditions

The temperature of the growing mix matters. Cold conditions can slow germination, while excessive heat can also cause problems. Keep moisture appropriate without saturating the mix.

03

Write down the date

Compare your sowing date with the expected germination window. If it has passed, review seed age, storage and any required pretreatment before starting again. There is no universal sprouting deadline.

A blank tray is a reason to investigate, not an instant verdict on the seeds.
