Give indoor seedlings a gentler start outside.

The garden can wait while young plants get acquainted with the weather.

01

Begin somewhere sheltered

On a mild day, start with a shaded, protected outdoor spot. Indoor-grown seedlings have not experienced the same sun, wind and temperature changes as plants already living outside.

02

Increase exposure gradually

Build up outdoor exposure over the days before planting. Adjust to the crop, weather and response of the seedlings instead of following a rigid universal timetable.

03

Keep watching

Protect tender plants from cold and strong wind, and monitor moisture. Hardening off is gradual acclimatisation, not a test of how much stress a young plant can survive.

A slower transition can be the kindest beginning.
