A better place to cut your basil.

When harvesting a stem, the leaves you leave behind matter.

01

Find a pair of leaves

On an established basil plant, locate a pair of leaves along a stem. When harvesting that stem, cut just above the pair and retain healthy foliage.

02

Take a considered harvest

Avoid stripping a small plant bare for one meal. Work with its size and condition, and use clean tools. The goal is a useful harvest while leaving a living plant to care for.

03

Be specific

This is guidance for basil, not a pruning rule for every herb. Different species have different growth habits, so identify the plant before copying a cutting technique.

Harvest a little with attention. Leave healthy growth behind.
