Before you water, look a little closer.

A dry surface is a clue. It is not the whole story.

01

Start below the surface

Feel the growing mix gently near the edge of the pot, avoiding stems and roots. The top can dry before the mix underneath. Use that observation alongside the needs of the plant.

02

Notice what changes

Pot material, size, growing mix, light and weather affect how quickly water is used or lost. A weekly reminder can prompt a check; it should not automatically trigger another watering.

03

When it is time

Water an ordinary container slowly enough to moisten the mix, and let excess drain. Empty collected saucer water. Specialised plants and self-watering systems need their own approach.

Check the plant and the mix. Then decide.
