A covered bed still needs your attention.

A barrier can help. It also changes the growing environment.

01

Start with a purpose

Choose a cover suited to the pest or weather problem you are addressing. Insect mesh and insulating row cover do different jobs. Secure a suitable barrier while allowing room for growth.

02

Check underneath

Look at moisture, temperature and plant response. A cover is not an excuse to stop checking the bed. Insulating materials may need ventilation or removal as conditions warm.

03

Remember the flowers

Crops that rely on visiting insects need access during flowering unless you use an appropriate alternative. A cover that protects leaves can also exclude pollinators. Match the approach to the crop and variety.

Protect the crop without forgetting what it needs.
