Compost needs more than a pile of scraps.

Think plant material, moisture and room for air.

01

Mix your plant materials

Dry leaves supply carbon; fresh green plant material contributes nitrogen. A pile made of just one material is harder to manage than a considered mixture.

02

Check how it feels

Decomposing organisms need moisture and oxygen. A very dry pile slows down; a saturated, compact pile needs attention to air and moisture. Aim for damp rather than dripping material.

03

Let conditions guide you

Turning and adjusting materials can help. Weather, materials and pile size affect the process, so avoid a fixed promise about when every pile will be finished. This note explains the process, not a complete accepted-materials list.

A compost heap is something to observe, not simply abandon.
