Your tree does not need a mulch volcano.

Spread it over the soil. Give the trunk some room.

01

Look at the base

A cone of mulch pressed against a tree trunk can hold moisture against bark. It may look tidy while creating conditions that are unhelpful to the tree.

02

Pull it back gently

Keep mulch away from the trunk and leave the natural widening at the base visible. Spread an appropriate layer over the root area rather than building a tall mound.

03

Know when to ask

A deeply buried or damaged tree base may need an arborist. Do not excavate aggressively or cut roots to imitate a diagram. Mulch depth and spread should suit the site and tree.

Think wide and clear of the trunk, not high and tight.
